DIY Home Improvements That Will Protect Your Home

DIY Home Improvement Projects

Since the coronavirus outbreak, people have been taking the time to finally get to that ‘honey-do’ list of home remodeling projects and DIY home improvements. While some of these upgrades are a great use of any extra time you have at home, others actually cause damage to a home if not properly installed or maintained. After all, some projects are still best left to the professionals.

Let’s look at the best home improvement projects you can do yourself and will benefit on your home:

Décor Upgrades

Now that the weather has gotten to a warmer state that should stick around for a bit longer, it’s a great time for projects like painting, wallpaper additions, or other home décor and design changes. Keep in mind that the environment and use through which your home goes through on a regular basis has a lasting effect on its appearance. Check out this article from bobvila.com to learn more.

Check for Leaks in Your Insulation

Insulation leaks often happen around doors and windows, electrical sockets, light switches, lighting, and anywhere ducts or wires lead outdoors. These pesky punctures will rob your home of the treated air from your HVAC system (unnecessarily driving up your utility bills) and potentially let in volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from the outdoors. If you’re not sure if you have a leak, try this simple candle trick.

Remove and Replace Old Caulk

Caulk is used to seal out water and prevent mold growth around sinks, showers, and drains, if you notice that these seals are discolored or flaking off, it might be time to remove and replace these seals. It’s a fairly simple process you can do yourself without much of a budget and will deter or prevent mold growth.

Improve Your Home’s Drainage

If water is not properly diverted away from your home, it can cause damage to your walls and foundation. Think about redirecting runoff if you need it, especially if your home is on a hill or at the base of a hill. It’s also a good idea to install a sump pump if you live in an area that is prone to flooding.

Cleaning

Dust, dust mites, and pet dander collect in homes regularly. Without a proper cleaning routine, these everyday allergens gather and wreak havoc on the air quality in your home. It’s also important to keep an outdoor home maintenance schedule–even if it’s seasonally. For example, cleaning your gutters and clearing the downspout is important to your home’s water drainage. Without completing this task, water will run down the side of your home and collect at the base, causing foundation damage.f
