How to Cope with the Loss of a Home

If the wildfires in California last summer taught us anything it’s that disaster and tragedy can strike at any time. Disaster doesn’t care how large your home is or what neighborhood you live it. It can happen at any time to anyone. So how do you cope with and move forward after something like that happens?

Royal Renovations understands that a house is more than the materials used to build. It’s where families grow, where people make memories, where lifetimes happen. Losing all of that overnight is devastating and terrifying. There’s no right way to grieve but there are steps you can take to help:

First of all, it’s important to remember that you’re going to experience an extreme rollercoaster of emotions—you’ll be devastated, angry, shocked, and sad. Allow yourself to feel whatever you need to feel. It’s part of the healing.

Contact your insurance company and start the paperwork process. You’ll need to file a claim and figure out what’s covered and what’s not.

Be sure to take steps to protect your property from further damage. Save receipts if you purchase things to make minor or temporary repairs so you can turn them into the insurance company. If you need to relocate temporarily keep those receipts as well.

Contact a restoration company to assess the damages and see what can be save or restored. Prepare an inventory of damaged or destroyed items. Consider photographing and documenting the items. This will be helpful when the adjuster comes to look over the damage.
