Monitoring your Home for Winter Damage

Exterior of a home with a blanket of snow

The last thing you want is to come home after a long day at work and discover that a pipe burst or an ice dam is causing a back-up into your home. That gorgeous powder can cause some major damage inside and outside and leave you scrambling to repair your home. You may even be left with some costly repairs come springtime. With a little preparation and some regular monitoring, you can keep your home safe all winter long.

Check your Roof and Foundation

Did you know that your gutters can fall off your roof and your shingles can start pulling away from your roof? If ice and snow builds up, it becomes heavy enough to slide right off your roof, and it can take your gutters and shingles right along with it. Ice dams can cause major problems not just on your roof, but inside your home. Water from your roof can leak into your attic and all the way down to your foundation. Come springtime, you may find a crack in your foundation. Monitor your roof for ice dams and safely clear the excess snow from your roof with a roof rake.

Look for Mold

Mold isn’t just a problem you have to worry about in the summer. Condensation can build up along surfaces that aren’t well-insulated. If it isn’t taken care of in a timely manner, mold and mildew can grow.

Look at Your Door Frames

When you carry wet feet through the door every night, you can bring that moisture with you where it may gather and encourage wood rot. Patch up any soft spots in your door frames before this becomes a problem.

Protect your Pipes

Frozen pipes can burst, stop your water flow, or cause a flood inside or outside of your home. Follow our tips to keep this from happening.

Monitor the Paint on your Siding

If you applied a new coat of paint at the wrong time, a burst of cold weather can cause it to peel off. If this happens, moisture can get underneath your siding and wreak havoc.

Check for Signs of Critters

The last thing you want is a critter making your insulation their home for the winter. If they’re looking for warmth, they may burrow in your insulation and eat through it. Not only will this make your home colder, it could expose your pipes.
